My own kitchen, which got better, not bigger. Read the story →

Everything is chosen by me, Jill Dawson. Rooms I’d happily live in. Pieces I’d genuinely want to own. And the thinking that makes good design work.

I look beyond the finished room to the decisions behind it: proportion, layout, light, colour, materials and the things you choose to live with. Then I turn that thinking into practical ideas you can use at home.
No endless inspiration. No product dumps. No decorating rules for the sake of them.

Just good design, decoded.

Why Everything But the Kitchen Sink?

The expression everything but the kitchen sink means almost everything imaginable.

That felt appropriate.

Because a good home is rarely about one big decision. It is about all the smaller ones around it: where something sits, how high it hangs, how the light falls, what deserves the money and what really does not.

Everything But is about those decisions. The things that make the room.

Who's behind it

I'm Jill Dawson. After years of renovating houses and gardens, looking at interiors, buying things that worked and occasionally things that absolutely didn't, I created Everything But to make good design easier to understand.

I'm interested in why something works rather than simply telling you that it looks nice. The aim is simple.

See what works. Understand why. Make it yours.
Jill Dawson, founder of Everything But the Kitchen Sink

A couple of things to know

Some links on Everything But are affiliate links, including links through partners such as the Amazon Associates programme. If you buy through one of these, I may earn a small commission. It doesn't cost you anything extra, and commission never decides what makes the edit.

Everything But is also a small operation, with a small-operation photography budget. So, occasionally, you'll see generated imagery used to illustrate an idea, mood or look. It will never be used to pass off an imagined space as a real one, or to misrepresent a product.
