How to Get the Club Look at Home?
For this look, we’re taking our cue from the relaxed, design-led world of Soho House with a little poolside energy thrown in. Think less formal country garden, more exclusive members’ club.
And for this one, you don't need a rooftop pool or a Soho House membership to get the look.
Start with the stripes
If there’s one styling trick that instantly gives a garden that poolside feeling, it’s the stripe.
Broad, confident stripes have a timeless quality that feels both nostalgic and modern. They reference the classic British deckchair, but when you use them in a cleaner, more contemporary way, they suddenly feel much more design-led.
Rather than introducing lots of different patterns, choose one strong stripe and repeat it across a few key pieces, perhaps a parasol, cushions and towels. It creates a visual thread that makes everything feel deliberately pulled together.
Colour is where you can have some fun. Keep the foundations natural so think cream, canvas, timber and rattan and then introduce a bold stripe in red, green, blue or yellow.
Swap the deckchair for a director’s chair
There’s nothing wrong with a traditional deckchair, but if you want to give the look a more contemporary edge, try a director’s chair instead.
With its clean lines, natural frame and generous proportions, it has the relaxed attitude of a deckchair but feels more substantial and considerably more comfortable for settling in with a book or over a long lunch.
Pair a couple around a small table, or use them as occasional seating around a larger outdoor sofa.
Add natural texture
The trick to making all those stripes and pops of colour feel sophisticated is to keep everything else quiet.
Rattan, woven fibres, timber and canvas provide the texture. A small rattan or woven side table gives you somewhere to put a glass, book or candle without introducing another dominant shape.
Keep the lighting low and warm
As the sun goes down, the best club gardens don't suddenly become floodlit. Keep the atmosphere going with low-level lighting: lanterns, table lamps and candles dotted around seating areas.
The result should feel warm, relaxed and slightly glamorous. Somewhere you could happily stay until the last drink has been poured.
The Everything But approach
The secret isn't buying everything new. It's choosing a few pieces that do the heavy lifting.
A really good striped parasol. A pair of comfortable chairs. Some beautifully simple towels. A woven side table. Warm lighting. Then layer them into what you already have. The result? A little bit of Shoreditch House, a little bit of British seaside nostalgia and a whole lot of summer.
