## The hallway

For the room you walk through first.

The hallway sets the tone before anyone has taken their coat off. Keep the palette to black, ivory and a flash of old gold.

Line up tall black tapers in black candlesticks at different heights, with a bundle of ivory ones in reserve. Put berried branches in a dark vase, a black pumpkin beside them and one skull, positioned as though it has always been there. A few gold pumpkins catch the candlelight.

It takes ten minutes to set up, and most of it works perfectly well for a November dinner party.

## The drawing room

For the room with secrets.

Think of a private library after dark. Books stacked a little too high. Aged brass, a heavy chest and a rather beautiful light that doesn't illuminate quite enough. Nothing too theatrical. Just enough to make visitors wonder what you've been reading.

Start with the lighting: a raven lamp and a row of tall black tapers. Then add an eerie portrait or two, a spell book that looks well thumbed and a beetle under glass.
